With the arrival of spring, dacha owners who deal with the land begin to purchase agricultural equipment. Even a small area is problematic to qualitatively cultivate by hand, not to mention large plots of land. Under such conditions, a power tiller becomes a real godsend.

Despite the rather high cost, it performs many functions, thanks to which the purchase pays for itself in just a couple of years.

Article Summary:

A power tiller and a power tiller: the difference between the concepts

Often unscrupulous sellers pass off motocultivators as lightweight power tillers. Meanwhile, these two implements of labor have enormous differences.

A power tiller is a mechanized machine designed to prepare the topsoil before sowing. It is used to remove weeds, mix fertilizers and nutrients into the soil.

More versatile is the power tiller. It is a mini-tractor capable of deep tillage.

Structurally, they are also different. The tractive force in a power tiller is created by a tiller installed on the drive shaft. The power tiller uses the principle of wheel traction. The latter equipment weighs more and requires considerable physical effort.

The features of the equipment are demonstrated by photos of power tillers, which can be viewed at the end of the article in our gallery.

Features of a power tiller.

The main application of the power block remains land work, among which:

Plowing. It is performed by hinging a plow on the device. The depth of the plowed layer is determined by the engine power. Serious units can cope even with virgin soil. Well plowed soil is rich in oxygen, necessary for plant growth.

Harrowing. Carried out by a special toothed nozzle. The process destroys the hard earth crust, formed as a result of drying of the upper soil layer. Circulation of air masses is improved.

Raking. On a potato field, you can’t do without a tiller. And here the tiller comes in handy, which with a special nozzle lifts the soil, creating neat furrows.

Planting of vegetable crops. For this purpose, additional accessories – seeders and potato planters – have been developed. The volume of the tank, in which the planting material is placed, is comparable with three buckets of potatoes.

But the functionality is not limited to this. You can expand it by installing additional attachments for the power tiller: aeration mechanism, shredder or motor pump.

In winter, the device turns into a compact snowplow. For this purpose, it is enough to complete it with blades, brushes and snow blowers. The power take-off shaft is used to transfer the torque from the drive of the power tiller to the attachments.

Types of power tillers

According to the type of engine there are 3 classes of machines:

Gasoline motor blocks. Among their advantages are high power, ease of operation and productivity. They produce less noise than their diesel counterparts. Another reason for their popularity is environmental friendliness (the volume of gases emitted during operation is much lower than in other types).

Diesel motor blocks. Despite the low cost of fuel, the unit itself will cost more than the gasoline “brother”. They are characterized by high cross-country ability, which allows you to use them on large territories.

Power tillers with electric engines. These are lightweight models that are convenient for working limited areas, such as land in greenhouses.

Choosing a power tiller

The choice of equipment depends on the purposes and conditions of its use. The main characteristic of a power tiller is the power determined by the area of the land:

  • With an area of up to 15 acres, a device with a power of 3.5-4 hp (working width of 60 cm) will cope.
  • For land plots up to 30 acres, a power tiller with the characteristics of 4.5-5 hp and a working width of 80 cm is suitable.
  • For half an acre of land, a 6-7 hp machine with an up to 90 cm grab will do the job.
  • An area of 1-4 hectares will require 10 hp. Above these values, the land should be tilled with a tractor.

Which power tiller to choose, will prompt the weight of the equipment. For heavy, virgin soil choose machines with a weight of 100-120 kg. They are ideal for working with attachments. If the soil is light, then pay attention to motor blocks weighing up to 70 kg. Clay soil type lends itself to designs with a weight of up to 100 kg. The larger the size and weight, the more difficult it is to operate the unit.

Operation in winter, in conditions of sub-zero temperatures, implies the use of a gasoline engine and an electric starter. This eliminates possible problems with starting the unit.

Also, when buying, you should determine how the unit will be used most often. If you plan to actively mow lawns or fields, clean the land from weeds, you cannot do without a power tiller with a rotary mower. It is designed for flat or slightly sloped terrain.

Structurally, the product consists of discs on which special blades are mounted. The more discs contained in a particular model, the wider the processing range.

Equipment is equipped with a trailer for transporting various loads. Trailer for a power tiller will allow you to quickly spread fertilizers to the intended places, bring construction materials and crops. A distinction is made between single-axle and two-axle trailers.

The most important criterion for selection is the load capacity:

  • For low-powered power tillers, buy trailers with dimensions of 1×1 m and a load capacity of up to 300 kg.
  • For medium-sized power tillers, up to 500 kg.

The body should preferably be made of galvanized steel. Recently on sale are plastic models, which are poorly adapted to heavy loads. A good option would be to complete the trailer with a seat. Many useful tips for automotive equipment can be found on the website of our partners.

Recommended manufacturers

Today, motor blocks are produced by both domestic and foreign companies. In practice, the former are more affordable, less demanding to fuel quality. But low-quality assembly and manufacturing of component parts is a frequent cause of breakdowns and failure.

Manufacturers of power tillers with leading positions on the market: Salut or Neva (both Russia), Caiman (France), Greenfield (China), Belarus (Belarus), Hyundai (Korea).

Let’s take a brief look at the best models in the ranking of power tillers:

“Belarus 09H-01” – refers to heavy power tillers, with a width of 70 cm and a digging depth of 20 cm. Four-stroke gasoline engine 9.4 hp allows you to lift even virgin soil.

Advantages – functionality, possibility to use big attachments. Disadvantages – arising problems with clutch and gear shifting. Initial price – from 80 000 rubles.

“Hyundai T 2000E” is a lightweight unit that can process an area of up to 25 acres. Parameters of the model: the width of the strip is 55 cm, the depth is 25 cm. Distinctive feature – electric motor 2.7 hp. Approximate price – 20 000 rubles.

“Neva MB-23SD-27F” – characterized by the power of 5.5 hp, three gears (including reversible). Processes the soil to a depth of 20 cm, with a capture of 85 cm. Advantages – low cost and availability of repair, developed network of service centers. Average price – 90 000 rubles.

“CAIMAN 330” – power tiller, equipped with a Japanese Subaru engine (power 9 hp). You can choose from 5 speeds, 2 of which provide reverse. Processing width reaches 60 cm, depth – 20 cm. The positive sides – long service life, quality assembly. Among the few disadvantages – high price, starting from 190 000 rubles.

Whatever model of power tiller you choose, pay close attention to the warranty and the availability of service centers for this equipment in your city.
