Time-tested solution – paving tiles for the yard, dacha, garden. The best surface for a relatively small area can not find, and there are several reasons for this.
Functionality. Tile is convenient for walking, it can easily withstand a small car or other mode of transport. It is the kind of pavement that is not afraid of frost, moisture, sunlight and temperature fluctuations.
Ease of maintenance and repair. Replacing a cracked slab is much easier than fixing a damaged concrete or asphalt surface.
Aesthetic appeal. Any kind of pattern can be made out of ceramic or concrete products. It is not difficult to buy the product of the desired shape, size and color.
But the main thing is that the laying of paths from such material with their own hands – a task that is feasible even for non-professionals, armed with a minimum of skills and a small set of tools.
Brief content of the article:
All work on laying tiles on the site begins with planning. It is necessary to measure all the parameters of the area on which the work will be performed. Based on these data, you should calculate the amount of tiles, sand, cement, glue and other materials needed.
Tools and supplies should also be prepared. The backbone of the list will look something like this:
- mortar mixing vessel or concrete mixer;
- A grinder with a tile cutting disk;
- A shovel and a bayonet shovel;
- two buckets;
- A rubber mallet;
Thoughts on tile selection
When it comes to size, color, future pattern or composition – there are no universal recipes. Everyone chooses a tile according to their taste, according to the design plan and taking into account the characteristics of the yard, dacha or garden.
To lay tiles for a private yard without mistakes, you should think about who and how it will move around. If it is only about people, it is enough to vibrated tiles with a thickness of 25 to 40 mm. If there are plans to keep a car, suitable material created by the same technology, but of greater thickness, from 40 to 60 mm.
When the backyard has, for example, a small private production and from time to time requires the entry of heavy machinery, part of the area should be paved with vibro-pressed tiles with a thickness of up to 80 mm. It is more expensive than vibrocast tiles, but can withstand considerable loads.
Vibrated tiles can be made by yourself. Vibrating table, molds, concrete mixer – this is the basic set of equipment for such work. But it makes sense only when the yard is large.
Detailed step-by-step instructions for laying paving tiles begin with site preparation.
The first thing to do is to clear the ground of debris, sod and other foreign matter.
The second is to dig a hole half a spade bayonet or more, depending on the type of cushion chosen.
Third – lay a layer of crushed stone or keramsite large fraction on the bottom.
The fourth is to lay a layer of geotextile. This material allows water and air to pass freely, but does not allow grass to destroy the path.
Fifth is a layer of sand, a sand-cement screed or a strong concrete base. The more unstable the ground and the higher the water table, the stronger the base must be. And, accordingly, if cars will drive on the path, a concrete base is a must. If the soil is firm, paving tiles on sand can be laid without hesitation.
For a concrete base, you need cement, sand, water and filler. The mortar is prepared according to the classical technology, in a ratio of 1:1:3. As a filler is used crushed stone, broken bricks or something similar.
On average, ten centimeters of cushion will be more than enough. The cushion should be completely dry. On hot days the concrete should be watered or covered with a film to prevent cracking.
The technology of laying paving tiles is extremely simple, but the work must be approached with a certain pedantry. This is not a process that will forgive the slightest defect. Sooner or later sloppy work will affect the appearance or stability of the path.
Even at the stage of site preparation, it is necessary to determine the width of the paths very accurately in order to properly select the size of the tiles. It is necessary to take into account the presence of gaps, curbs and other elements, if any.
The surface under the tiles should be as even as possible.
Once everything is ready, it’s time to start laying the tiles. To implement the selected pattern or design, you must prepare its elements, cut as necessary and put them at the place of work.
You can find popular patterns and compositions, from geometric to volumetric and artistic, on the photo of paving tiles laying. It’s also not difficult to come up with your own variation, but you should definitely take care to buy the source material in the right proportion.
The laying process – step by step instructions
Curb. To make the curbstone hold on more reliably, make a special concrete lock, almost a groove. This is a great solution, although time-consuming. It is sure to ensure the longevity and stability of the path.
Tile. Placed on the sand base after watering. The surface is levelled with a rubber hammer, on a string stretched in advance and under the building level.
The order of laying – from the bottom point in the direction of the rise and necessarily from itself. That is, the paver should move forward along the already prepared path. This approach will help to leave the already prepared base flat. The starting point for installation is some kind of boundary, a front door, for example, or something similar.
Gap. It is important for the water to have a place to go and for the quality of the surface. The pattern needs to be laid out evenly. It is reasonable to use special plastic spacers for this, which will not make the gap between the tiles too different.
There are tiles with spacer locks, these are small ribs that do not allow you to make the gap wrong.
Grouting the joints. Performed in two steps: with clean sand of fine fraction and sand-cement mixture. A broom serves as a tool for sweeping. In a construction supermarket, you can buy a ready-made grouting mixture, but this is an additional cost, especially not justified.
Watering with water. Pour until small puddles form.
Impregnation. To protect tiles and concrete substrates from cracking due to temperature extremes, impregnation with mixtures called hydrophobisers is used. They fill the pores, keeping water out, and also prevent sunlight and mechanical stress from destroying the substrate.
When the tiles are laid, it is necessary to arrange for their care. It consists of constantly sweeping and removing snow in winter. It is not recommended to scrape snow with a metal shovel, much less to knock down ice with a crowbar. A plastic implement is sufficient for such work.
