Home, whether it is a private property or a modest apartment, is a place where we can be ourselves, where we can enjoy privacy and rest from other people. Sometimes you don’t even want to be disturbed by the housemates. Or someone has already gone to bed, and someone continues to work hard at the computer. And in the morning, a sleeping family member goes to the kitchen, risking waking up the worker who just took a nap… All these problems are solved by installing interior doors.

Interior doors are designed to divide rooms, to hide the inside of a room from prying eyes and noise. Of course, they also have a decorative function: the doors should blend in with the interior and complement it.

Leafing through the catalog of the best interior doors, you can find options from the most diverse materials and in the most original style solutions. When choosing, you should pay attention not only to the appearance and size of the door, but also to the features of its design, opening mechanism and other nuances. And in this article we will try to help you.

Article Summary:

Types of interior doors

First, let’s get acquainted with the opening mechanisms – this is one of the most important characteristics of a door. Four types are most common, becoming the most preferred in different situations.

Swinging

These doors can probably be found in every home, which is not surprising: it is the most structurally simple and versatile solution.

As a rule, interior versions have one sash; double-leaf ones are found only between a spacious hallway and the living room or dining room. If necessary, a lock, latch, or other locking mechanism is added.

Sliding

The main advantage of this kind of choice is space saving. While swing doors require additional space to open, a compartment door slides along the wall. Installation of interior doors is done internally or externally. In the first case, the door, opening, is hidden in a special box. In the second, it remains in view.

The door itself is fixed to the rail. It is a matter of personal convenience whether to choose the upper or the lower rail. Using both at the same time allows you to increase the reliability of the construction. Only the upper one attracts by the absence of a threshold. The problem can be solved simply by sinking the lower rail into the floor.

Folding

This type of design is noticeably more complicated than the alternatives. The door is an accordion, which folds up when opened. It does not take up unnecessary space, which makes the folding door a cross between a swing door and a sliding interior door.

The weak point of the design is the hinges, or rather the number of hinges. To make them last longer, it is recommended to install double-leaf doors instead of single-leaf ones: then there will be less load on the hinges of each half. Ideally, there should be no more than two hinges on a door.

Swinging

An unusual design in which the door does not open in the usual sense, but rotates around its axis. For the living room is probably the most uncomfortable option in terms of operation, installation, price and appearance. But in a public place it is the best place.

The materials of the doorway

By studying photos of interior doors in homes, you can decide on the look you want, but the inside stuffing is just as important.

Array

Solid wood is a timeless classic. It looks great, adds solidity to the room, is environmentally safe and will last for many years.

It could be called the best choice, if it were not for a number of disadvantages:

  • First, it is the price – natural wood is expensive, and not everyone can afford it.
  • Secondly, the integrity of the manufacturer: violation of the rules of wood drying will affect the longevity of the door.
  • Third – wood does not like moisture, so you should not put doors made of this material in the bathroom and bathroom.
  • Finally, the weight: it is quite significant.

When choosing, consider the type of wood: pine and other softwoods are more available and common, but are not highly durable. The best quality doors are made of oak, beech or walnut, but you have to pay more for them.

Artificial materials

MDF offers one of the best combinations of price and quality. This material has a number of undoubted advantages: strength, moisture resistance, environmental friendliness, ease of processing. The most complex configurations of doors are made of it. A heavier alternative to MDF is particleboard.

Meshboard, for all its cheapness, is extremely unstable to mechanical impact – a thin door made of it can be punched through by accident.

Plastic and aluminum are strong and moisture-resistant materials, which makes them a good choice for a bathroom door. They stand out for their spectacular appearance and come in a variety of colors.

Exterior Coatings

On top of the inner filler is a layer of decorative material. It is through it that the door is in contact with the environment – so you should not be irresponsible in its selection.

PVC film features a rich variety of colors and patterns, including imitation of other materials. At the same time it is very resistant to chemical and mechanical influences, which makes it one of the best choices.

Veneer is a budget-friendly finish that is not inferior to natural wood in its decorative characteristics. It is durable, practical, quite strong and not afraid of moisture. In other words, a veneered door is versatile and can be installed in any room.

The material allows for a variety of finishes. The price of the door is influenced by the type of veneer used – natural or synthetic. The first is a thin, up to 1 cm, slice of wood; the second, aka ecoveneer, is fibers bonded with synthetic resins.

Laminate is not afraid of moisture and temperature fluctuations, has an attractive appearance with wood imitation. Laminated door can be easily cleaned with chemicals. With all the advantages the price remains very democratic.

The door leaf can be completely or partially made of glass. Often colored glass is used, sometimes decorated with patterns – this allows for very interesting effects.

Modern laminated triplex glass is highly durable, and even broken glass is not very dangerous. The main drawback of this design is poor soundproofing.

Size

The size of interior doors in a home depends on the size of the openings. For example, an 80-90 cm opening is fitted with a standard-sized single-leaf door. The width of the opening from 110 cm allows the installation of a double-leaf door.

A door leaf thickness of 4 cm or more will best protect against noise.

In apartment buildings doorways are standardized, but in your own cottage can be very diverse. Nevertheless, it is recommended to stick to the classic dimensions to avoid unnecessary headaches when searching for and installing doors. Remember, too large a door will be uncomfortable to use.

Before buying, take careful measurements of the opening, thresholds, toeboards, find out the thickness of the frame and the width of the architraves. It is better not to do the installation of interior doors with their own hands – even a small jamb later can cause considerable inconvenience. It is much easier and faster to cope with the masters-professionals.
