Own house is a cherished dream of very many people, although nowadays, more and more people in our country are trying to make this cherished dream a reality on their own, the more so – it becomes quite possible even for people with average income. In the process of construction, there are many problems to solve without specific knowledge is quite difficult, and sometimes – quite impossible.

One such problem in the construction process, becomes the roof. As one of the main protective elements of any building, it should not only perform its functions to protect against rain, snow, wind and save heat, but also look beautiful, aesthetic, match the chosen style, and therefore its construction should be given the closest attention.

A very important step in this work is to install a special base, on which the roof will be laid, and also fastened. Browsing sites with a description of the technology of construction, pay your attention to photographs of the finished roof sheathing: you will note the complex intertwining of boards, rafters and beams, although by looking closely, you can distinguish the orderliness of their mutual placement.

Some home masters, having noted for themselves this system, think that everything related to the crate is already quite clear to them, but at the first independent attempts to do everything without preparation, they understand: the apparent simplicity conceals many not obvious points, and therefore, to avoid problems, let us dwell on issues related to the arrangement of the crate and the features of its construction.

Brief Article Content:

What is a crate

In the most general form, the crate for the roof, or should I say – under the roof, is a special kind of frame, made in strict compliance with a selected system of mutual arrangement, fixed to the rafters, designed for laying and fastening of roofing elements.

Thus, the design of the purlins must meet the following requirements:

  • Distribute the entire roof evenly over all load-bearing rafters;
  • Reliably hold the roofing material, regardless of external climatic conditions and influences;
  • Create conditions for effective ventilation between the roof and the insulation layer of the special protective coating.

The installation of purlins is made on the rafters, which, in turn, is a load-bearing frame of the entire roof.

There are different variations in the construction of trim, namely:

  • Continuous: the gap between the individual elements of the sheathing is not more than one centimeter. It is allowed to use plywood sheets in the construction of continuous purlins;
  • Small – sparse design: the gap between the elements is between three, to four centimeters;
  • Normal or sparse design: the gap between the elements, in this, the classic design, is between thirty and seventy-five centimeters. Sometimes there are variants where this gap can be more than seventy-five centimeters;
  • Single-ply battens;
  • Two-ply construction.

Choose the right roof sheathing should be based on the type of roof decking and the features of the chosen design of the building roof itself.

Thus, for soft shingles, soft roofing materials and flat slate, mount a continuous crate. For metal and ceramic shingles, as well as conventional slate, use sparse types of sheathing.

For a roof that will be subjected to strong external influences, use multi-layer crates, in normal conditions – a single-layer.

As a rule, for the construction of purlins use bars, slats or boards of coniferous wood. In general, it is possible to use the following types of materials:

  • Trimmed, unedged, or tongue-and-groove boards;
  • Moisture-resistant plywood;
  • Special, oriented strand board.

Important: Boards with a width of more than fifteen centimeters should not be used for crates – they, over time, warp in their cross-section.

Another point that must be taken into account: the size of the nails must be twice the size of the board in which it will be hammered.

Before you start thinking about how to make a crate on the roof, think through all the points involved in choosing the type of construction and materials needed, and this, in turn, will depend on the external weather conditions in your area, the type of roofing material and your financial resources.

Installing the battens

Immediately note that the technology of work on the installation of sheathing for a double pitch roof or conventional flat roof, especially there is no difference. If the angle of inclination is insignificant, the structure will have fewer requirements for mechanical strength, and in addition, all the work will be much easier.

When creating the purlins, do not forget that when installing it is necessary to simultaneously think about and mount the waterproofing and thermal insulation.

As materials can be used conventional roofing felt or a special microperforated film. On the features and design of hydro-thermal insulation we will not talk about here, this is a separate and quite serious topic.

In general, the sequence of installation work on the installation of sheathing, in the most general form, is as follows:

  • All the necessary markings are made on the rafters;
  • Installing waterproofing and thermal insulation. A counter batten is installed on top of it;
  • All elements of the sheathing are installed;
  • After installing each joist or board, it is necessary to check the dimensions and relative positioning of the elements.

The roof itself is installed on the assembled purlins.

Special, new types of purlins

Recently, more and more popular is the use of a new type – metal roof purlins. This type of sheathing is made of special metal profile, the construction of which is fastened with special fasteners, which are anchor bolts, screws and screws. In some places it is allowed to use wrench bolts and screws.

The advantages of metal trim are obvious:

  • Durability;
  • Fire Safety;
  • Durability;
  • Versatility.

This type of construction uses elements of various profiles and sizes. As a rule, they have an aluzinc or galvanized protective coating.

General conclusions

Regardless of the type of crate you have chosen, whether it is a traditional wooden structure or a new type – steel, its technical structure is similar, and the technology of installation works differs only in the peculiarities of the material, but the sequence of operations remains the same.

Note, mount the crate with their own hands is quite on the power at home, it does not require a special kind of tool or highly specialized skills.

When carrying out all work, do not forget about safety precautions, the more so, all work must be carried out at height, and therefore protect yourself – use safety ropes and belts.

If the structure is made of wood, it is necessary to take care of the fire protection coating: it is done by treating the structure with a special solution.

The last thing I want to say: rationally calculate the amount of material required for the entire crate, thereby saving your finances and the family budget, will allow special calculators, they can be found on the Internet.
