Some homeowners consider the use of profiled sheeting to fence the site as frivolous. This article will tell you why this is a misconception, as well as teach you how to choose the right materials and to make your own installation of a profiled sheet fence.
Brief content of the article:
Why choose this particular fence
This construction material has a lot of advantages, the main of which is high speed and ease of installation. Any person can install this type of fence.
You do not need to be qualified as a builder and have in his arsenal of specialized tools – will do the standard, available to every master of the house.
The only difficulty will cause welding, but if you do not have the machine and the appropriate skills, you can do everything without it. Other advantages:
- Low cost of materials, affordable even with a small budget;
- high strength and resistance to aggressive external environment;
- durability, resistance to burnout;
- aesthetic appearance;
- The sharp top edge of the sheet, making it difficult for an intruder to climb over it.
With the right approach to the choice of materials, you can get a great solution that will decorate and make your country site original. Take a look at the photos of the fence made of corrugated board to see for yourself.
Planning and plotting a site fence
Before carrying out the work it is recommended to make a schematic drawing. On it it is necessary to mark the place of installation of a profiled sheet fence, taking into account the topography, the location of buildings, access roads, trees and shrubs.
Be sure to mark on the drawing where the gates will be mounted, the places of lowlands and hills, the location of support poles. Write down the height of the fence and the length of its straight sections.
When planning the frame, keep in mind that profiled sheet metal has a high sail. The higher the fence will be, the thicker the cross beams should be.
If you decide to make a sectional design, make the distance between the posts a multiple of the width of 1-2 profiled sheets. Sizes of profiled sheeting for the fence vary with each manufacturer – keep this in mind when doing the calculations.
How to choose the right material
Profiled sheeting is available in several types, which have their own markings. Before buying it, pay attention to the letter and the numerical index that characterize this building material.
The liters come in the form of:
“H” – the product has a large thickness and a high profile with longitudinal grooves, carrying out the function of the stiffening ribs. It is used in the construction of the load-bearing roof and walls, as well as for the equipment of permanent formwork of monolithic structures.
Has increased strength, but because of the higher price to use such sheets of corrugated board for the fence economically unjustified.
“C” – a specialized product for wall cladding. Characterized by a small sheet thickness and profile height not exceeding 21 mm, which makes it very light. Mainly used for the construction of fences. The cheapest of the presented, but less durable compared to other types.
“NS” is an intermediate type of product. Sheet thickness is average – 35-40 mm. Most often used as a loaded element in the lining of walls and the construction of sheds, but in general is fairly versatile. Can be used for fencing, but most of the strength characteristics of the material will remain uncalled for here.
“MP” is another universal type, widely used in construction. Slightly more expensive than “C”, but also more resistant to damage. Ideal option for the construction of the fence.
The figure includes the thickness and width of the sheet. The length is set arbitrarily by each manufacturer.
For the fence the best choice will be products with a wave height of 18-21 mm and sheet thickness of 0.6 mm. Smaller figures will lead to reduced reliability of the structure, and large – to unnecessary costs without any benefits.
Different coating of profiled sheeting is also different. Remember that galvanized products last no more than 30 years, and with a coating of polyester – no more than 50 years. The latter naturally cost more.
As supporting poles can be used any material, but the simplest, most reliable and affordable is a metal pipe. Its necessary parameters are in direct dependence on the expected load.
If you want to apply round pipes, their diameter should be 60 to 100 mm, rectangular – 60×40 or 40×40 mm. The thickness is 2 mm. Fence posts with smaller parameters will not withstand gusts of wind.
Transverse beams should be made of rectangular pipes with parameters 40×40 or 40×20 mm. Products made of wood is better not to use, as they tend to rot in places of attachment. This will affect the appearance of profiled sheeting and reduce its service life.
Do not suit and metal corners. He will not be able to provide normal wind resistance. The thickness of the walls of the bars should not exceed 2 mm, otherwise it will be difficult to screw the screws.
To assemble the frame of the fence under the profiled sheeting without using welding, you will need special brackets and hardware designed for mounting. You can use rivets, bolts or drill self-tapping screws.
For screwing the profiled sheet, it is better to choose the option with a gasket of neoprene rubber. It will ensure a tight fit without damaging the surface.
Material calculation, approximate cost
To correctly calculate the necessary amount of building materials and find out how much the fence will cost, do the following:
Determine the number of sheets you need. To do this, divide the total length of the fence by the width of the sheet, taking into account the overlap. If the fence will be sectional, subtract the total size of the posts. Round up to the higher side.
The calculation should be made in pieces by the given height, not by the area of the required amount of profiled sheeting, otherwise you can easily make a mistake.
Determine the number of posts. In the case of a solid fence, divide its total length by the length of the distance between the posts. It should not be more than 3 meters, otherwise you will have to increase the thickness of the posts and the number of crossbars.
In the case of a sectional fence, the number of posts is determined by the number of sections. Do not forget about the corners, the location of gates and doors. The height of the posts should be equal to the height of the fence plus 30% to deepen into the soil.
Calculate the number of crossbars. If the fence is less than 2 meters high, two crossbars are used, each 30 cm from the edge, more than that, three crossbars are used. Multiply the number of rows of cross bars by the total length of the fence to figure out the total carcass
The number of brackets needed is determined by multiplying the number of rows of cross beams by the number of posts. Count the brackets, taking into account that the fixing of the sheet is carried out every 2 waves.
Carrying out the installation work
The process of mounting a profiled sheet fence consists of the following steps. First, clean the surface of the soil from any interfering objects. If you want the fence to last as long as possible, you need to equip the foundation under it.
For such a structure, a simple strip foundation with a depth of 30-40 cm will do. Its width should be equal or greater than the width of the support post. In the places where the posts are installed, it is necessary to make pillows, so that their bottom does not contact with the soil.
Before installing the posts, treat them with an anti-corrosion compound. Start by placing them in the corners and pulling a rope, which you then use to level the others. Check everything with a level or plumb line so that the fence will not fall down afterwards. Now you can pour the mortar.
When the concrete has dried well, proceed to install the joists. If the fence is solid, this is done butt-welded at the front of the post. If sectional – at the back with a holder. There is another option – on the sides. Its advantage is the ability to attach profiled sheeting additionally to the post itself. But the process is more labor-intensive.
And the last step is screwing the profiled sheets. There are no complications, you just press them to the structure and screw them with self-tapping screws. After you finish, it is recommended to treat the fasteners with a special paint to prevent rust.
As you can see, there is nothing complicated in the installation of such a structure. But if you doubt your abilities – it is better to entrust this task to an organization engaged in the installation of fences from corrugated board on a turnkey basis. Just choose a proven one, so that then there will be no problems.
