A small artificial pond will be a great decoration of the garden and a favorite place of rest of the household. Relax under the murmuring and splashing of water, admiring the flowering plants – what can be better?

Everyone is able to make it on their own. On the web you can find not only photos of decorative ponds, but also detailed master classes of creating a pond of any shape and size. You will only have to decide on its location and get down to work!

Article Summary:

Site Selection

Finding the optimum location of the future pond in the garden is an important stage of the drafting process. Although it will serve only a decorative function, a natural ecological system must be organized around it to prevent it from turning into a swamp.

However, being near deciduous trees will cause the pond to be covered with a layer of fallen leaves in the fall.

Plants need light to grow, so make sure that the chosen location gets enough light. At the same time, it should not be too much.

The water in the pond can overheat in hot weather, which stimulates active algae growth and negatively affects other pond inhabitants. Ideally, sunlight should enter the pond in the first or second half of the day, but not less than five hours a day.

Great if there is an unused slide on the site: the greater the slope of the terrain, the more spectacular the result will be. This is an ideal place to form a cascade.

On the other hand, a lower location will allow for fuller enjoyment of the beautiful view, and the sun will be slower to dry it out.

Another plus of the chosen location will be a beautiful reflection in the water, such as surrounding plants or decorative objects.

The type of soil imposes its own restrictions on the device of a decorative pond. Loam, clay and peat soil are the most suitable options. Black earth promotes the formation of silt. The organization of the pond on acidic soil must necessarily include protection of the sides and bottom.

Design choices

A decorative water body does not necessarily have to be a pond. Creating a small fountain or an artificial waterfall will take a little more time, but the result will be worth it.

Decorative pond – the simplest and most versatile type of pond, suitable for almost any site. An abundance of plants, including aquatic plants, will help emphasize its purpose. Show your imagination by creating amazing compositions that catch the eye.

Streams and cascades are most effective in relief areas. Water in them is constantly moving, and the cascade due to the steps resembles a small waterfall with a characteristic noise. On a flat area you can organize a channel. The flow of water in it is slower, and it is wider. Do not forget that the water in such ponds gradually evaporates, watch its volume.

An interesting solution is to create a small swamp. Its depth usually does not exceed 30 cm. A great option for a low-lying and wet area. In this case, you do not even have to make an effort: dig a hole of suitable shape and depth and wait until it itself fills with water. It is necessary to decorate the marsh with marsh plants.

An even more miniature pond is called a “swamp bed”. Its depth does not exceed 10 cm. According to its name, it is filled with decorative shallow and riparian plants. “Flowerbed” can be designed in a container made of chamotte or wood with waterproofing. A container made of concrete with an interesting texture will look stylish.

The fountain can act as an independent body of water or be installed in an existing one. There are submersible and floating models. Original fountains in the form of figures of animals, people and others will be a great decoration of the reservoir at the cottage. Attention: strongly splashing water fountains can harm aquatic plants.

There is no water in the “dry” pond: it is replaced by other means, which can include plants and even stones. “Alternative” to water will be inexpensive and lightweight black polycarbonate. Here you can and should experiment: a “brook” from pebbles, a “lake” from flowers, a “pond” from polyethylene film.

Blue flowers (ageratum, salvias, forget-me-nots, bellflowers, etc.) can help simulate water. Plant them so that you get “waves”. Finish the composition with seashells and pebbles. An interesting addition would be a small bridge.

Size and shape selection

Of course, the bigger the pond, the more spectacular it will look. There is a small rule: it should occupy at least 1/5 of the view area. You should use the perspective with the fullest view.

Choosing an area less than 3 m2 is impractical because it will not naturally purify the water. However, if the water will be in motion, this rule can be omitted.

A depth of up to 50 cm is considered shallow. A minimum of 80 cm is required if you want to put fish in the pond. A frost-free pond (which does not require draining for the winter) should have a depth of at least 1.2 m.

The form is better to choose, based on the style of the garden. To the English landscape will suit a round pond. Regular style implies geometric shapes, and irregular shapes will suit the Eastern style: Chinese or Japanese. The main thing is that it complements the landscape, not contrasts with it.

Materials

For a small pond (up to 5 m2) plastic bowls are often used. It will not be difficult to install, and it will serve for a long time. The disadvantages of a ready-made bowl are the shape invented by the manufacturer for you and the small volume.

Waterproofing film is suitable for those who create a pond according to an individual project.

Polyvinyl chloride, aka black PVC, is the most common option. Its advantage is that it can be easily repaired with ordinary glue.

Polyethylene is cheaper, but less elastic and durable. It can be repaired with self-adhesive tape.

The thickness of the butyl rubber film is chosen based on the depth of the pond. If it is less than 80 cm, the thickness can be 0.8 mm, otherwise – 1.2-1.5 mm. It is easy to camouflage the excess edges along the shoreline with ordinary stones.

A geometrically shaped pond is convenient to place in a concreted excavation. The minus of this choice is the complexity of installation, which requires experience in working with concrete.
