Every dacha owner or owner of his own house knows that there is no way to do without a saw on the garden plot. And almost everyone has more than once wondered what kind of it is better, what power is needed. With the help of a saw it is easy to replenish the stock of firewood for the cold season, make pruning of fruit-bearing trees or make cuts when constructing benches or arbors.
Of course, in the past, standard hand tools, such as a hacksaw and a saw, were quite sufficient. But over time, technology has advanced much further, so now almost everyone can buy a chainsaw with excellent features.
However, the choice of a particular brand of chainsaw should be approached very responsibly, so that it is of high quality and powerful enough to withstand active use in cutting firewood, construction work or seasonal in the garden.
Qualified professionals believe that when choosing a chainsaw, you need to have some knowledge about them. For example, to know the classes they are divided into and how they differ. The photo shows some chainsaw models.
There are classes into which professionals divide the range of tools produced:
- low power or amateur;
- Semi-professional, mainly for construction work;
- Professional, used for felling massive trees in large areas.
But the main thing to know about chainsaws is their technical properties.
Varieties of chainsaws
Low-power or amateur chainsaw models have low power and endurance, as their operating period is about 30 minutes a day, with a longer operating time and increased load they will quickly become unusable.
The power of such chainsaws is equal to 2 kW. They are equipped with special low-profile chains, due to which the degree of vibration at work is reduced. But the productivity remains low. They are mainly used for sawing firewood for the winter and for pruning branches.
This model is equipped with a gasoline-powered, internal combustion engine, as a result of which it is convenient, does not put strain on the hands and is a great help in small gardening tasks or repairs in the house. If the house is not large and does not require much support in the required form, the Makita chainsaw is ideal.
Stihl 180 model is produced by another company, but also belongs to this class. When choosing a saw, you should be guided by their technical parameters.
Semi-professional are more powerful models that can handle increased loads in construction-related work. This class includes a huge range of models with increased power, which are used for jobs (felling scaffolding, large-scale construction).
But their disadvantage is that it is not possible to perform work for a longer time. It is not possible to work with them all day long, because the tool may become unusable from the load.
The power of this class is 2-3 kW, the length of the bar is 40 cm, the weight of the chainsaw is approximately 6 kg. Such models are useful for minor construction work and in the garden.
Professional class includes the most powerful (from 2.8 to 6 kW). They are in demand for works of varying complexity and duration. But there is no need to buy them for a cottage or household plot, as they are suitable for larger-scale or long-term works. For example, when cutting wood in a large area or building a structure such as a bathhouse.
Chainsaws are stable, their operating period can reach up to 2 thousand motor-hours without needing repairs, they weigh more than 7 kg, which requires a good physical fitness of dacha owners.
It follows that for daily or seasonal work of ordinary complexity, the best option will be a semi-professional chainsaw. For work of increased complexity, it is worth paying attention to quality models “echo” at affordable prices.
The most important factor when choosing a certain brand of saw is the power, because its performance, cutting depth and speed of action depend on it. To buy a quality tool at the best price it is necessary to calculate in advance the possible load on it. For example, for small garden work is quite suitable model with a power of 2 kW.
For construction works by your own forces, it is better to give preference to modern models with power indicators of 2-2.6 kW. But remember, the higher the power indicator, the heavier the tool weighs.
Tire Varieties and Sizes
In addition to power, you should pay attention to the chainsaw tires and their size. They are made with different kinds of tires:
- Flat and narrow type, which are made from ordinary utility saws. One of the components is a low profile chain, which prevents kickback and reduces the risk of injury;
- Lightweight plan, consisting of two steel plates, to lighten the construction and weight of the tool. They are easy to work with;
- with interchangeable heads, which are professional. Available for powerful saws used for quite a long time, even on a daily basis. Used in large-scale jobs involving sawing or felling of trees.
The length of the bar also makes a difference. A long one is good for working with bars of considerable thickness and makes a deep cut easier, but the power must match it. A low-powered model will make a slow cut, consuming a lot of fuel. In addition, it will quickly become unusable.
Each model has instructions indicating the optimum tire length to fit it. It is strictly forbidden to increase the tire size, a shorter version is possible.
When choosing between models with the same power rating, you should prefer the one with the smaller tire size, because its operating speed is several times higher.
Choosing a chain
The saw chain steps, which come in the following sizes: 0.325; 3/8; 0.404 inches, have a great influence on the speed parameters and the amount of work to be done. This figure is the same for all, but you have to have some idea about it.
Both the pitch and the length dimension must match the power:
- 0.325 inches is fine for low-power models with low-profile chains, with little vibration;
- 3/8 and 0.404 are designed for long-term use and high volume of work. But it’s better to use special saw chains for working with frozen wood or dirty wood.
When repairing a tool, it’s worth using parts from the same manufacturer.
Bouncing the saw back in the direction of the sawyer is called backfire. It occurs most often when the guide bar hits the edge of the wood. When buying, it is necessary to specify in the store the presence of protection against impact, which is: brake and in the form of a shield.
Brake is the more common option, which looks like a lever device that has two modes. The lever is set to the mode closest to your hand when you start, and when you hit it, it spontaneously switches and turns the saw off.
It’s also worth finding out if there’s vibration protection. You can even do a little test by turning the saw on. Low-power models do not vibrate much, thanks to the rubber pads.
Before buying, it is advisable to be sure to familiarize yourself with the models of chainsaws from the best manufacturers, as well as to study their technical specifications.
